  • Clearing up after the explosion of 3 bombs in Claudy, Co Londonderry, N Ireland, UK, in which 7 people died. The bomb attacks on the small village of Claudy is believed to have been the IRA's reaction to Operation Motorman in which the British Army ended no-go areas in Belfast and Londonderry. It is claimed that Motorman was the biggest British military operation since Suez. 197207310380b.<br />

  • Desertmartin, Co Londonderry, farmhouse where in a premature explosion Charles Logan, Toronto Street, Belfast, described as a major in the UVF, Ulster Volunteer Force, died on 18th November 1973.  The house was owned by a former Ulster Unionist councillor, who along with his wife, were injured in the blast. In a subsequent UVF statement it was stated the couple were being held prisoner and had nothing to do with the explosion. .197311180710b.<br />

  • Desertmartin, Co Londonderry, farmhouse where in a premature explosion Charles Logan, Toronto Street, Belfast, described as a major in the UVF, Ulster Volunteer Force, died on 18th November 1973.  The house was owned by a former Ulster Unionist councillor, who along with his wife, were injured in the blast. In a subsequent UVF statement it was stated the couple were being held prisoner and had nothing to do with the explosion. 197311180710c.<br />

  • Scene of booby-trapped car explosion near Maghera, Co Londonderry, N Ireland, in which RUC constable, Noel Davies, died on 24h May 1975. The vehicle has been hijacked earlier in the day and abandoned on the Glenshane Pass where it was examined by Constable Davies and a colleague  who on finding nothing suspicous decided to drive it the short distance to Maghera Police Station. Unknown to the officers the INLA, Irish National Liberation Army, had left a device in the car.  As his colleague was driving away Constable Davies started the vehicle detonating a 15lb bomb which killed him instantly. 197505240455ND1.<br />

  • Bloody Sunday, Derry, Londonderry, 30 January 1972, Father Edward Daly, waving blood-stained handkerchief, as he escorts wounded protester to safety. During the events of that day 26 civilians were shot, 13 fatally on the day, and one more  died two months later.<br />
<br />
Father Daly became RC Bishop of Derry in 1974. He died in August 2016 aged 82 years.<br />
<br />
UK Prime Minister David Cameron apologised for the events of Bloody Sunday in June 2010 in the House of Commons admitting that the Parachute Regiment had fired the first shots.<br />

  • Kevin Agnew, prominent member, Provisional Sinn Fein, Maghera, Co Londonderry, N Ireland, centre of picture, attending the first anniversary on 28 January 1973 of  Bloody Sunday. The controversial shooting dead of 13 people by the British Army's Parachute Regiment occurred during a Civil Rights March. A fourteenth died several months later.   • Sergeant Dermot Hurley, a fluent Irish speaker and a native of Co Wicklow, Rep of Ireland,, who was shot dead on 11th November 1971 by the Provisional IRA in an off-licence only 100 yards from Oldpark RUC Station in North Belfast. Constable Walter Moore, native, Londonderry,  also died in the shooting incident. Sgt Hurley was the first Roman Catholic member of the RUC to be murdered in the Troubles. 197111110447b.<br />

  • Soldier displays a Russian Bazooka Type Rocket Launcher which had been  used for several days by the Provisional IRA in a concerted rocket attack on British Army and RUC installations in Londonderry, N Ireland, in November 1972.   • Policeman with binoculars observes the Dundalk to Londonderry goods train which was hijacked at Meigh, Co Armagh, N Ireland by the Provisional IRA on 15th August 1973. The raiders placed two milk churn bombs in the cab of CIE locomotive 201 and made off with mailbags in the leading carriage. The line was eventually cleared on the 17th August 1973 when a British Army marksman triggered the bomb on his ninth shot. 197308160419<br />

  • Two civilian workers at Ebrington Army Barracks, Londonderry, John Dunn and Cecilia Byrne, died when a booby-trap bomb attached to the car in which they were travelling exploded. The explosion happened in the immediate vicinity of the army barracks. Mr Dunn was giving his co-worker a lunchtime driving lesson when the bomb detonated.
