Dr Robert Q Fugate, resident in Albuquerque, New Medico, USA, where he is involved in research into adaptive optics for the US Air Force. His work is revolutionising astronomy and revealing amazing new things about the universe. At its simplest the "technique" he has developed allows telescopes to operate at ground level with the same clarity that they do from outer space. Like most defence-funded research the benefits will eventually benefit the man in the street i.e. opthalmics. Ref: 2000090101.
