Burnt-out shell of a car in which two bodies were found at Downing Street, off Shankill Road, Belfast, N Ireland on 23rd January 1977. The victims, stabbed & shot, were Thomas John Boston, Crumlin, Co Antrim and John Joseph Lowther, a native of Co Mayo, Rep of Ireland, but who had been living in Bolton, Lancashire, UK, for 20 years. Boston, a Protestant and an Orangeman, and Lowther, a Roman Catholic, worked for the same building company, had been out drinking together and ended up in a loyalist club on the Shankill Road. The loyalist gang which picked them up included senior UDA members, Jim Craig and Arthur Bettice, who were later shot by their own organisation. 197701230025.
