George Campbell (1917 - 1979) RHA. Campbell born Arklow, County Wicklow, spent formative years in Belfast. A self-taught artist he began painting in 1941 & was close associate of Dillon and O'Neill. During 40's he exhibited in Belfast, Dublin, and London. First exhibited at RHA in 1947, & in nearly every show for the next 30 years. In 1954, became an associate of the RHA. In 1964 made a full member. In 1951 visited Spain for first time & returned nearly every year subsequently. Also exhibited in Spain his last show being in Malaga 1973. Spanish Government made him a Knight Commander of Spain. Campbell painted landscapes in the West of Ireland & Spain. Died Dublin in 1979, buried Glendalough, Co. Wicklow. Ref: 1978110307C.
