Dr Eamon Phoenix, History Department, Stranmillis College, Belfast, with extra mural students.Taken March 2009. Friar's Bush Cemetery is Belfast's oldest Christian site. Some historians believe it may have been used in pre-Christian times and also that it is linked with St Patrick who died circa 490 AD. In the late 18th century it was widely recognised as a Roman Catholic burial ground. In a major cholera outbreak in 1832-1833 it was used for the mass burial of victims. A low mound near the cemetery entrance is still referred to as Plaguey Hill. 200903101995
