British soldiers of 1st Battalion, Glosters, came under serious attack by rioters in West Belfast on 17th October 1974, the day after republican prisoners set fire to the Maze Prison, near Lisburn, N Ireland. More than 130 prisoners were injured in the trouble - nine needed hospital treatment. One officer was treated for a suspected fractured skull.
