Royal_Hotel_Whitehead_explosion_197303150134g.jpg
Firemen were still at the Royal Hotel, Whitehead, the morning after its owner, Larry McMahon, Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, married, 4 children, Roman Catholic, was murdered at his Newtownabbey home by the UVF, Ulster Volunteer Force, a loyalist paramilitary organization, on 15th March 1973. An explosive device detonated killing him instantly when he went to investigate a noise at his front door at 21.45. His wife and some of his children were also injured. Mr McMahon's success was a rags to riches story. He started off as a barman and ended up owning the Royal Hotel in Whitehead and a chain of betting shops as well as three pubs. 197303150134g
