Crumlin Rd Jail escapee Martin Meehan arrives Belfast court in Army personnel carrier. After escaping from jail and a period in the Rep of Ireland, he returned to NI, where he was arrested on 9 Aug 1972. Charged with escaping from lawful custody he successfully argued that under the Special Powers Act a British soldier had no power of arrest & as such was awarded £800 in compensation for being illegally detained for 2 3 days, & the government were forced to amend the Special Powers Act to legalise the detention of others. He was also charged with IRA membership & received 3 year sentence to become the first person to be convicted of the offence. He was imprisoned in Long Kesh, & released 4 October 1974. Flg sentence he was interned.l. He was last internee released after internment had been abolished. 197208000514
